Territorial Forum of Rosario’s Periphery.

This forum aims at boosting the creation of a place for meeting, debate and thinking about the periphery of Rosario. The main actors will be those living and working in the periphery, the ones who really know and, sometimes, suffer the periphery, those who defend it, identify with it and mainly those who try to turn it into an open space for everyone, a much more fair and supportive place. Two editions have already been held in November 2008 and 2009. Both events were attended by citizen organizations from several districts of the periphery of the city which had the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences related to social struggle and organization.
 

The Forum of the periphery was created at the occasion of the Nuevo Alberdi Assembly. It consists of a space for debate and deep thinking where the inhabitants of the districts are the main actors. The first edition of the Forum, celebrated in November 2008, gathered around fifteen organizations. The main problems of the periphery were put forward and housing-related problems were emphasized. The aim of the second Forum consisted on searching possible solutions to the problems pointed out in the first edition. We concluded that we need to start acting together in order to fight the general discontent caused by the answers coming from the top. Following this logic, three fundamental points were defined: functioning, structure of the organization and independent tools. The result is really interesting. According to Girons organization: “the periphery arises as a social actor, a political actor with a voice we can hear and which starts to be listened to in the cities. And that is something we did not have before. The media only make references to districts when there are robberies or deaths. The population wants the media to show how life is in the districts: the periphery has a proper cultural and economic life which must be made public”.
