4th World Forum on Human Rights of Nantes, France

From June 28th to July 1st 2010 Nantes will be the World Capital of Human Rights and will welcome over 2500 actors and activists from around the world. During four days the participants will be assessing the situation of human rights in the current time of crisis and will work on human rights-based approaches to overcome the crisis.

 

International organisations, national institutions, local governments and NGOs will converse freely, exchange knowledge and good practices and debate on equal footing.

 

Too often, the different actors of human rights work separately. In order to face the existing and emerging challenges for human rights, the solidarity among all those who are working for the promotion, protection and implementation of human rights is essential. Thus, the Nantes World Forum is the place where local governments, NGOs, civil society associations, academics and activists from all around the world can get in touch, debate and create solidarity networks.

 

4 themes in 4 days with plenary sessions alternating with round-tables:

 

  • From Soil to Plate / From Values to Rules colloquium. In partnership with  Lascaux, the European research programme (June 28 and 29)

  • Identities and minorities – living and acting together, in diversity (June 29)

  • The constant struggle to protect freedom of expression and opinion (June 30)

  • Defending and strengthening labour law despite the crisis (July 1st)

A place where one can meet with the main world human rights defenders, among which:

·         Rajagopal P.V., Leader of the Indian movement of landless farmers “Ekta Parishad” (Forum of the unit), with a million adherents and sympathizers.

 

·         Rebiya KADEER, Representative of the ouïghour community in exile, form oriental Turkestán, Xinjiang's province (People's Republic of China).

 

·         Shirin EBADI, Iranian Lawyer, Nobel Peace Prize 2003…

·         Construction of the social fabric in Latin America : four approaches (Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Guatemala) (Organizer : University of Nantes)

·         Human Rights in times of Crisis and Conflicts (Organizer: World Organization of French Speaking Countries OIF)

·         The European Charter for Human Rights in the City: innovative practices (Organizer: UCLG Commission on social inclusion and participative democracy)
